Comet hops are grown by our friends at Hirschfeld Hops, located in New Knoxville, Ohio. Comet is quickly growing in popularity throughout Ohio, but it is still a relative newcomer. There are not very many farms growing Comet in Ohio yet, but we expect demand to increase quickly. We were lucky to get our hands on some, and we are excited to offer it for sale. Hirschfeld Hops is a trusted grower within the Ohio Hops Growers Guild, so you can rest assured that their hops are of the highest quality.

Hops Description:

Comet is a cross of English hops with a wild American variety and was first released in 1974. Commercial production ceased in the 1980s as it was phased out in favor of new super-high alpha varieties. Recently however, it has enjoyed a comeback thanks to its unique profile.

Intended as high-alpha bittering hop when first released, Comet has found a second life as an aroma variety in IPAs, wild ales, farmhouse beers, and other cutting-edge craft styles. Punchy and bright tangerine and grapefruit citrus gives way to secondary lemon grass, eucalyptus, and floral notes.

About the Growers:

Located in New Knoxville, Ohio, Clinton & Danielle Hirschfeld began Hirschfeld Hops in 2017.  What began as a few hobby plants for home-brew quickly grew into something much greater.  In 2019 the 1-acre field on their farm was converted to a functioning hop yard.  Centennial, comet, and fuggle populate the hop yard, with 2020 being the inaugural harvest for the young farm.  The couple enjoy being a part of the hops and craft beer community in Ohio, along with raising their 4 children in a unique on-farm environment.  Clinton is an avid home brewer, using his own hops to help promote and demonstrate the unique character of Ohio hops.  From Clinton & Danielle at Hirschfeld Hops:  cheers!
